Beautiful Austria     not Australia, Austria

Josie & Wolfgang
Austria, December 2023

For too long time we have ignored to tour our homeland and experience its gorgeous landscapes and sights waiting right in front of us, because anyway we could go and see it anytime. Does this sound familiar to you?

Our Homeland - small is beautiful

To arrange with restrictions during the Covid pandemic in the recent few years we've set out for getaways within Austria, to see regions we've never visited. Our travel destinations have surprised us and more than ever before we've learned to appreciate the beauty of our homeland, its people living in the various provinces, their customs and traditions.

Our journeys during the summers from 2020 till 2023 took us to Southern Styria and the Schilcherland in Styria, to the countryside of Salzburg, to Salzkammergut in Upper Austria, to the beautiful landscapes of the Karwendel and Rofan mountains in Tyrol embedding lake Achensee, and to lake Weissensee and the Nockberge in Carinthia. Each of these beautiful regions is unique in its own way. To sum it up, it's a kaleidoscope full of surprises made from lush green landscapes and meadows overlooked by shaded forests and rocky mountains, lakes nestling in the valleys, regional culture, customs and traditions, diverse regional cooking styles and dishes, both traditional and refined to the very best modern interpretation, and of a melange of regional dialects of the german (Austrian) language. Last but not least, since none of this comes on its own, we have experienced great appreciation for the people living there, their commitment for what they do to make each region what it is.

Austria is a small but very diverse country consisting of nine federal states, each of which has its own character and a number of smaller regions, which significantly differ from each other. In fact there is no one and only image of Austria, its landscapes, people and culture. Austria has also nine provincial governments, administrative authorities and - what else - nine governors, which some consider being appropriate and others deem a completely expendable regulatory overkill. The nine provincial governors were given the title "Landeskaiser" (provincial emperors) a long time ago, which ironically speaks for itself. Anyway, as trained Austrians we can cope with it. This, however, is a completely different story.

Dreaming the day away

At this point we leave you with some of our photographs of the regions that we have visited during the recent years. Our picture gallery is kind of potpourri, a melange without strict order.
